Enfield Wins 2010 Hahndorf Festival

May 10th, 2010
The band played a very entertaining programme at Saturday’s Hahndorf Band Festival.
There were four other bands in attendence including Campbelltown City band (D Grade), Hahndorf Town Band (C Grade), K&N Youth Brass (D Grade) and Mitcham City Brass (C Grade).
The stage competition was a handicap event with all bands competing against each other in an even competition. Bands in D Grade recieved a bonus of 15 points and bands in C Grade had 10 points added to their final score.
Our Musical Director Robert Kavanagh selected a programme which proved to be enjoyable for both the audience and players. The band filed ontstage to ‘Strike Up the Band’ featuring percussionist Shayne Tarling, and then moved into ‘Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White’ featuring principal Cornet Mark Hall on Trumpet. Next came ‘Just a Gigolo’ and then the beautiful hymn ‘Mid all the Traffic’. The band finished their set with the impressive medley from the movie ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’.
The band recieved some excellent feedback about their performance from the audience and very helpful and constructive criticism from the Adudicator, Peter Doherty. A big thank you to the friends of the band who came out to listen and to our special helpers who played on the day.
The results from the day were as follows:
Stage Competition:
Enfield Brass Band – 96
K&N Youth Brass – 91
Mitcham City Brass – 89
Hahndorf Town Band – 85
Campbelltown City band – 83
Street March:
Mitcham – 47
Enfield – 45
Campbelltown – 44
Hahndorf – 42
K&N Youth – 41
Although a little disapointed at not also taking home 1st prize for the street march, the band played a cracking rendition of the crowd favourite, ‘Australia March’ (Dave Polain), and was awarded 2nd place. Congratualtions to Mitcham City Band and their Drum major for a well deserved street march win.
Finally congratulations must go to the Hahndorf Town band and Festival committee for organising such a great event.

2009 Award Winners

December 18th, 2009
Geert receiving the Most Outstanding bandsperson Award for 2009

Geert receiving the Most Outstanding bandsperson Award for 2009

The band had their final rehearsal for the year last night with their musical director Robert Kavanagh, who has returned after a short leave of absence. The band has had a very busy year in 2009 and next year promises to hold many more challenges and exciting opportunities, including two performances at the Adelaide Fringe and Fringe parade, as well as preparing to defend their C grade State Champion title for the 3rd year running at the 2010 State Band Championships.

Congratulations need to go out firstly to Rohan Leighton. Rohan is the band’s Eb Soprano player and was awarded the trophy for Most Improved Bandsperson in 2009. Well done Rohan!

The winner of the Ron Arthur Perpetual trophy for Most Outstanding Bandsperson in 2009 was awarded to the band’s Solo Trombonist, Geert Cornelis. The Most Outstanding Bandsperson is the player who in the eyes on the Musical Director has shown dedication, commitment and an outstanding attitude. This award takes into account excellence in playing  but also the enthusiasm of the recipient towards the goals of the whole playing group. Congratulations Geert!

The band is taking a short break over Christmas but will be back rehearsing on Thursday January 7th 2010 to prepare for the annual Schutzenfest as the Klemzig Oompah band. The band will also be looking to transition to a regular Wednesday practice night sometime in January, so we will keep you posted.
